Posted on 08 February 2021

The private archives of Dr. Günter Burghardt deposited at the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) were inventoried and described, and the fonds is now open for consultation in the reading room.

The fonds includes documents produced and collected by Günter Burghardt that concern in particular his professional activities at the European Commission from 1970 to 2004 in different positions and with various core responsibilities and working areas. The fonds also includes materials related to Günter Burghardt’s academic and advisor activities from 2005 to 2012, as well as the memoirs of his professional career and the chronicle of his family. It is composed of various types of documents, including official notes and reports, administrative documents, speeches, press cuttings, papers and publications. The GB fonds constitutes an important reference for the study of the external relations of the Commission and in particular its transatlantic relations with the USA.

Günter Burghardt’s activities at the Commission documented in the fonds cover, amongst others, his times as Deputy Head of Cabinet to President Jacques Delors, as the Commission’s Political Director in the framework of EPC from 1987 to the end of 1999, as Director General of External Relations, and as Ambassador and Head of the European Commission’s Delegation in Washington, USA.

EU institutional documents in the fonds are subject to the 30-years rule governing access to EU archival documents. Documents can be consulted in the HAEU reading room in Florence.
