Library Fines

Fines are charged for overdue items. It is your responsibility to manage your library borrowing and to renew or return your books on time. Check your library account  for current loans, and any outstanding fines. All users, whether researchers or staff, are liable for fines.

Fines are calculated automatically on the basis of the number of days an item is overdue and  the type of material. The days the EUI is closed are not taken into account for this purpose.

Any queries on fines should be sent to library@eui.eu

How fines are calculated

Loan items are divided into three groups:

  • Normal loans: €0.50 per day for first 2 weeks; €1.00 per day after.  Suspension of library rights after two weeks.  An automatic penalty bill of €70.00 is charged after one month
  • Inter-library loans: €1.00 per day for first 4 days; €2.00 per day after. Suspension of library rights after two weeks. An automatic penalty bill of €70.00 is charged after one month
  • Overnight loans:  €1.00 per day for first 4 days; €2.00 per day after. Suspension of library rights after two weeks.  An automatic penalty bill of €70.00 is charged after one month.

Grace Period

  • Fines will be waived on normal loans returned within 6 days of the due date
  • Fines will be waived on overnight loans returned within one day of the due date
  • There is no grace period for Inter-Library Loans

How to pay fines

You can pay your fine in the Library (Library Coordinator’s Office on the entrance floor) by ATM/credit card only from Monday to Friday, during normal office hours.

If you are still at the Institute, you can also pay by bank transfer at the BancaCRF.   If you are out of Florence, please contact library@eui.eu  in order to have full details of bank transfers from within Italy and abroad.

Proof of payment should be taken to Library Coordinator’s Office or sent to library@eui.eu , and if you have a library suspension, it will be lifted immediately.

Suspension and billing

You will be suspended from all Library services, including access to electronic resources, if any item is more than two weeks overdue or if fines have accumulated to  €50.00 or more.

After one month users will receive an automatic penalty bill of €70.00 for each item overdue. Payment is obligatory even if the item is returned later. Any extra replacement costs will also be charged.
