CNTS - Cross-National Time-Series

Data description

The Cross-National Time-Series database provides international and national observations for 200 states from 1815 onwards.

CNTS is available to registered, current EUI members on the secured K:\ drive  (see access procedures below).

Database variables include: population, government finances and per capita GDP. A full list of the 194 variables is available on this CNTS page .

The CNTS data project began at SUNY Binghamton in 1968 and has since undergone many revisions in scope. The evolution of the database is explained on this supporting web page . An in-depth description is available in a 20pp Word document filed with the data on the secured EUI K:\ drive.

CNTS contains data for over 200 states from 1815 to 2006 (excluding the periods 1914-1918 and 1940-1945). The basic structure of the archive is that of a rectangular matrix of periodically augmented records, each encompassing data for one country-year.

On the Library server there are seven CNTS files in two sub-folders (data and documentation):

  • CNTS data
  • Codebook
  • Tab.of States
  • User's manual
  • Instructions
  • License terms
  • Bibliography

Time period

Data ranges from 1815 onwards (excluding 1914-1918 and 1940-1945).
