ECRI: Lending to Households in Europe


Data description  

The statistical package on Lending to Households in Europe − compiled by the European Credit Research Institute − is a collection of Excel-format data on credit to households, including consumer credit, housing and other loans.  38 countries are included:

-  27 EU member states
-  4 EFTA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland)
-  3 EU candidate countries (Croatia, Former Yugoslav Rep. Macedonia & Turkey)
-  4 other global economies (Australia, Canada, Japan & USA)

The purpose of the Lending to Households in Europe database is to provide statistical information allowing users to make comparisons between the countries covered.

 


Time period 

The 2010 wave covers 1995-2008.

How to access data 

Access to this data is restricted to current EUI members who have completed the registration procedure, as follows:

  • Complete the online EUI Data Registration Form  (selecting 'ECRI' from the dropdown menu)
  • Sign the EUI 'Conditions of Use' agreement and the 'Confidentiality Declaration' at the Badia Library (Economics Office, 085)
  • Following confirmation of status, registered current EUI members are given clearance to access the data via secured server.  There is no off-site access.

After registration, click on the Data folder and then on the centre link 'ECRI Statistical Package 2010.' Each variable is explained in the left column of the Excel frame. Use the tabs at the foot of frame to access variables. Consult the right column of the main Excel page for details of figures.  These instructions are also available in the 'Docs' folder.

Data on major time series such as outstanding consumer credit, loans for house purchase, loans to non-financial corporations and annual final consumption expenditures of households are available. Data are presented in euros and in non-eurozone currencies. Ratios of household indebtedness are calculated and illustrated with graphs.
