European Values Study

Data description

The European Values Study  is a large-scale, cross-national and longitudinal European survey covering politics, work, religion, morality, leisure and primary relations. EVS is produced by Tilburg University and international collaborators.

Representative national population samples (citizens over 18) and face-to-face interviews are used. Survey questionnaires are standardised across waves.

To facilitate time series analysis, the 'EVS Longitudinal Data File 1981-2008' has been generated from the four main waves.

Additionally, the harmonisation of variables and data allows the construction of the 'Integrated Values Surveys 1981-2008' data file, including the four waves of the European Values Study (1981-2008) and the five waves of the World Values Study (1981-2008). Information on how to create such a data file is given on the Integrated Values Surveys 1981-2008  page.

How to access data

All EVS data and documentation are provided by GESIS – the German social sciences infrastructure service provider.

ZACAT  – the GESIS Online Study Catalogue – supports full access to data sets and documentation and assists users in identifying trend variables for all four EVS waves. Additionally, ZACAT supports comparisons of original questions in all languages fielded in the surveys.

Read the Usage Regulations  on the GESIS site.

The 2011 Atlas of European Values  [available at LIB 306.094 ] was presented at an international conference 'The Value(s) of Europe' at Tilburg University in November 2011.

The EVS Repository  contains direct links to publications based on the data of the European Values Study. A subset of the publications will be enhanced with additional information on the data, interview questions and descriptions of variable construction.

For secondary education, a special EVS website is available . To offer a better understanding of European values, courses and modules are offered which allow for developing and answering research questions.
