Government Finance Statistics Historical (IMF)
Historical Government Finance Statistics (IMF) contains over 19,000 time series of annual revenue, expenditure and other transactions of 149 governments from 1972 to 1989.
This is a complement to the contemporary Government Finance Statistics (IMF) database covering 1990 to 2010.
The Historical GFS database covers the period from 1972 to 1989.

The database browser allows the selection of series, displayed in spreadsheet for export to Excel. There are three views for browsing the database:

A country view table using the GFSM 1986 format

An economic concept view that provides access to similar themes across countries

A view based on time series codes.
The Historical GFS database text or 'flat' file (GFSHIST.new) is stored in scientific notation format. This file can be found in the DATA directory. The data items are stored in a compressed form, which maintains six digits of accuracy for every observation. The database description file (GFSHIST.rtf) is available in the documentation section of the directory tree.
