World Bank data

This page describes World Bank data online; World Bank data on CD-rom at the EUI Library; and the World Bank's WITS data software solution.

Special note: In April 2012, the World Bank announced a new open access policy for documentation and data.  From July 2012 the policy will be implemented via the new Open Knowledge repository .

World Bank - online portal

World Bank Open Data  provides online access to major international economic and development statistics including: Millennium Development Indicators; the Doing Business database; Education Statistics; Gender Statistics; World Development Indicators and Global Development Finance.

Use this online catalogue to access data . First-time users can also view an online video  introducing the World Bank open data system.

The Mobile Apps directory  gives a list of software applications for use with statistical data.

The World Bank central micro data catalogue  provides access to household level data and reports on economic and social issues.

The eAtlas of Global Development  maps and graphs more than 175 thematically organised indicators for 200 countries. The eAtlas of Gender  provides data on gender equality worldwide.

The World Bank also has an Economic Modeling section for forecasting and policy analysis .

EUI users also have access to CD-rom versions of World Development Indicators  and Global Development Finance , available at the Library issue desk (see below for details).

Coverage varies by World Bank series.  Major series range from the early 1960s to present.

Information about World Bank webinar events is available at this link

World Development Indicators

World Development Indicators  presents data in six categories: World View, People, Environment, Economy, States and Markets, and Global Links – covering more than 900 indicators for 210 economies.

WDI is available both online  and via CD-rom at the EUI Library issue desk.

WDI has been issued annually since 1960.

A description of the WDI database is provided on this World Bank page . A Users Guide  provides further information about conventions and definitions. The WB Data Catalogue  gives access to complementary databases.

Current EUI members can also access the CD-rom version at the Library issue desk (ref. DJ-AA WORLD).

Global Development Finance

Global Development Finance  is the World Bank's database on the external debt of developing countries.

GDF is available both online  and via CD-rom at the EUI Library issue desk.

Global Development Finance presents data on total external debts of 128 countries in the World Bank's Debtor reporting System (DRS). The database is updated annually with a narrative account of recent trends and tables, summarising capital flows and debt statistics for reporting countries. The database covers more than 200 debt and financial flows indicators for 128 countries with data from 1970 onwards.

Data is online  from 1970.

For further details of the GDF database, please see this World Bank page .

Current EUI members can also access the CD-rom version at the Library issue desk (ref. DJ-FD-GLOBAL).

World Integrated Trade Solution (WITS)

From 2011, the web-based version of the World Integrated Trade Solution  (WITS) software no longer requires local installation.

First time users of the WITS application  should register and create a password.  This permits the interrogation of World Bank data series.

Special note: Because the EUI has bulk download rights to UN Comtrade , users should access Comtrade data by following the instructions on the Library UN Comtrade   page.

Database of Political Institutions

The Database of Political Institutions  is available on the World Bank research site.

Data is available in a zipped Stata file.  Instructions on using ZIP files to compress and decompress data are available on this EUI page .

Variable definitions are provided by project leader, Dr. Philip Keefer, in this PDF file .
