European Documentation Centre Classification

Following the decision to create a European Documentation Centre (EDC) , a special system of arrangement was devised for the documents and publications.

This system groups the documents/publications primarily by issuing body (i.e. the European Community/European Union and the Council of Europe ).

There is a further subdivision for the main constituent organs (e.g. the European Parliament) and then another subdivision by subject where the amount of documentation produced requires it (i.e. the European Commission).

A third subdivision classifies information by form, i.e. periodicals (33), series (66) and books (99).

The result is a meaningful sequence rather than a classification system as such.
