Key European Union Publications

The EDC contains the official publications of the European Union (EU) and the Council of Europe, both received by deposit.

European Union publications

Due to the multilingual nature of the EUI the publications of the EU are received in four languages: English; French; Italian, and German.

 

European Union publications fall into four broad categories:

 

1. Legislation, preparatory documents and case law

 

• Treaties : Treaty establishing the European Community and the various amending treaties 
• Official Journal of the European Communities  (OJ), L series (Legislation)and C series (Information and notices)
• COM documents. 
• European Parliament (EP) Session documents  (Committee reports)
• EP debates 
• Economic and Social Committee  opinions
• Committee of the Region s opinions
• Reports  of Cases before the Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance

 

2. Research studies

 

Studies which are carried out by Directorates-General (you find an example of a DG here) ; by external experts (you find an example here ) or by an EU body or agency (you find an example here )

 

3. Explanatory and background material

 

• General reports such as the Annual general report on activities 
  and the Monthly Bulletin 
• Annual reports in various policy areas such as regional policy
  and agriculture 
• Periodicals in various policy areas such as education  and competition 
• Green papers , white papers ,
• Reports on policy and implementation of legislation  published as monographs and or in the COM document series.
• Explanatory brochures  on topical subjects such as those published in the series Europe on the move and European documentation

 

4. Statistical publications (see Statistics collection )

 

Note: Each category above is illustrated with some important examples with links to the EUI Library catalogue entry and in many cases also the on-line version. The examples are given for illustrative purposes and are not exhaustive. They refer to the official publications and documents only ie they do not take into account the wealth of secondary literature pertaining to EU affairs located elsewhere in the Library.

Council of Europe publications

The Council of Europe publications are received mainly in English and to lesser extent in French and include the following:

• Conventions, agreements and treaties concluded in the Council of Europe 

• Proceedings of the Parliamentary Assembly : Debates  ; Texts adopted  ; Orders of the day ; Documents 

• Case law of the Court of Human Rights 

• Publications  in the fields of law, human rights, social affairs, environment, education and culture
