Diplomatic Documents Collection
Diplomatic Documents are accessible both as books and microforms in the EUI Library. Some collections are also accessible in remote databases subscribed by the EUI and in remote public web sites.
A separate section called "DIPDOC" (Diplomatic Documents) was created in the History Collection. This is a small collection dealing with all printed Foreign Relations Documents published by some European Countries and the USA like for example the so-called "FRUS": United States. Department of State: Foreign relations of the United States., Washington: Government Printing Office, 1861- (See also the US Government web site: Foreign Relations of the United States which allows you to access -from the FRUS- full-text e-documents free of charges) or the Italian Foreign Relation Documents: Italia. Ministero degli affari esteri. Commissione per la pubblicazione dei documenti diplomatici: I documenti diplomatici italiani., Roma: Istituto poligrafico dello Stato, 1952-., located at: DIPDOC 945.08-Q ITA, etc..

The printed Diplomatic Documents available at the EUI library are collected all together in a specific library section called the "DIPDOC collection".

Some of these documents are available in our library only as microform copies of the original printed books.

The classification of DIPDOCs (Printed Diplomatic Documents) is made of a Dewey number which qualifies the country and the historical period. A "subject" letter "-Q" is added to qualify the cotent as being "diplomatic history". (See, all other subjects ).

"This unique reference product involves indexing, abstracting, and capturing on microfiche a large selection of U.S. government documents obtained from presidential libraries. These libraries receive declassified documents from various government agencies, including the White House, the CIA, the FBI, the State Department, and others. As researchers visit these presidential libraries and request documents, the libraries photocopy and provide them to us for filming. The result is a collection of more than 75,000 documents, consisting of more than 465,000 pages, that has literally been built by researchers themselves for nearly two decades...".

The US Government web site: Foreign Relations of the United States .
"The series, which is produced by the State Department's Office of the Historian, began in 1861.... The volumes published ... contain declassified records from all the foreign affairs agencies. Foreign Relations volumes contain documents from Presidential libraries, Departments of State and Defense, National Security Council, Central Intelligence Agency, Agency for International Development, and other foreign affairs agencies as well as the private papers of individuals involved in formulating U.S. foreign policy."
The University of Wisconsin Digital Collections: Foreign Relations of the United States ." This digital facsimile of Foreign Relations of the United States is a project of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Chicago Libraries. This is an incomplete run from 1861-1960 with missing volumes being added as they can be acquired and processed."
DIFP - Documents on Irish Foreign Policy are available as print copies in the library but an "advance search" on full contents is also available here .
