Reference Works in Social and Political Science

he EUI Library contains a wide range of subject-oriented dictionaries and encyclopedias of interest to social and political scientists.  Most are available only on paper.  However, one of the largest and most important is available both in hard copy and online:

The most comprehensive and general reference works on paper are located in the “Dictionaries and Encyclopedias” section which is located on the Entrance Floor.

  • Brill Dictionary of Religion
    Richly illustrated and with more than 500 entries, the dictionary is a multi-media reference source on the many and various forms of religious commitment. The Brill Dictionary of Religion Online (BDR) covers a wide range of theologies, religions and religious phenomena on a global scale.
  • The encyclopaedia of Islam
    Contains: Index of proper names, index of subjects, glossary, and index of terms, articles, figures, line drawings, genealogical tables and maps, and fully searchable bibliographices. User may search in both Arabic transciption and in English. Allows for Wildcard, Boolean and proximity searches.
  • International Encyclopedia of the social and behavioral sciences  
    Online edition of the International Encyclopedia of the social and behavioral sciences, consisting of 4,000 articles, 90,000 bibliographic references, as well as comprehensive name and subject indexes.

  • International encyclopedia of the social sciences
    This 9-volume encyclopedia on the social sciences is hosted on the Gale Virtual Reference Library platform and is a successor to the Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (1930-1935) and the initial set of the International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences (1968). The new online set highlights the expanding influence of economics in social science research and has nearly 3,000 new articles and important biographies contributed by scholars from around the world.

  • The concise Oxford dictionary of politics
    Written by a team of leading political scientists, this is an authoritative and up-to-date dictionary of politics. It provides coverage of political thinkers and concepts and discusses new topics such as Guantanamo Bay.

  • New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics Online  
    A companion work to The New Palgrave: A Dictionary of Economics. The main geographical focus is North America and Britain, although some 30 countries are included. Most of the essays are followed by bibliographical references. The online edition contains the full text of the 8 volume print edition.
