During the Degree Conferring Ceremony recent EUI graduates receive a diploma attesting the successful completion of their studies at the EUI. It is also a unique opportunity to celebrate this important occasion with their family and friends and the whole EUI community.

Authoritarian regimes repress social movement organizations. Democratic transitions are often considered as elite-driven. Nevertheless, recent events in the Middle East confirm the important role civil society can play in promoting and stearing democratization from below. This debate focuses on recent examples of mobilization for democracy, on their (domestic and international) preconditions, dynamics and likely effects.

 

 

28 January 2011 - Ceremony in Honour of Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa 

Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa was Italian Minister of Finance (2006-2008), a committed European and one of the founding fathers of the euro. He was also a friend of the EUI and was a member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank (1998-2005) during the period preceding the launch of the EMU and the following phases.

With Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, one of the main actors who decisively contributed to the vision, the design and the launch of the Euro disappeared.

During the ceremony the EUI will announce the creation of a Chair / Programme in honour of Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa: a study programme on monetary union and the role the single currency plays in the global economy.

 

 

1 October 2010 - Felipe González Márquez at the European University Institute 

In May this year, Felipe González Márquez , Chairman of the Reflection Group on the Future of Europe in 2020-2030 Time Horizon , submitted the Project Europe 2030 Report to the European Council, and he now presents the Report to the European University Institute Community.

On 1 October at 11.00 in the Theatre of the Badia Fiesolana the former Prime Minister of Spain delivers a speech: "Project Europe 2030, Challenges and Opportunities".

 

 

1 october 2010 - EUI Conferring Ceremony 

This important annual event takes place on Friday 1 October at 15.00 in the Church of the Badia Fiesolana.

President Josep Borrell will award Ph.D. and LL.M. diplomas to around 90 alumni, the largest number of diplomas conferred in any single EUI Ceremony.

During the Ceremony, Joana Mendes will also receive the Mauro Cappelletti Prize awarded for the best doctoral thesis defended at the EUI in the field of comparative law.

Christopher Hanretty is the first winner of the newly set-up François Mény Prize. This prize is awarded for the best thesis in the comparative study of Political Institutions.

The programme also includes the conferral of three EUI Honoris Causa Doctorates to Sabino Cassese , Jürgen Kocka  and Richard Rose .

 

 

18 June 2010 - José Manuel Durao Barroso at the European University Institute 

On 18 June, the President of the European Commission will deliver a speech at the Badia Fiesolana entitled "European Union and Multilateral Global Governance".

This is the Inaugural Lecture of the new Global Governance Programme  at the European University Institute.

The online live streaming of the event will take place from Friday 18 June at 12.00 a.m.
