Exchange Agreement with Columbia University
Exchange Agreement with Columbia University
Overview:
One EUI researcher may attend Columbia Law School for a period of one semester per academic year.
EUI researchers in the second or third year of the Law department are eligible to participate in the exchange, subject to support of the faculty supervisor and departmental recommendation
The arrangement is reciprocal and involves no fees being charged at either end.
EUI students admitted to Columbia will be registered as Visiting Scholars.
Students from Columbia are admitted by the EUI Law Department as Visiting Students with the full right to all facilities, to attend classes, to submit research papers, and to be graded in the same way as EUI students (but according to Columbia University requirements)
Duration is 4 months (September to December: Fall semester; or mid-January to mid-May: Spring semester).
Programme benefits:
1. Tuition fees at the university are waived
2. A subsidy contributed by the Law Department towards defraying living costs.
3. Registration costs up to a ceiling limit of US$ 1000 including mandatory US “SHIP” (Student Health Insurance Plan) health and accident insurance premium or an alternative policy that is deemed adequate
4.Travel costs provided up to a maximum of € 650.
Application procedure:
Submit to the Law Department by 28th November (see Chapter 10 “Guide to the Law Department”):
1. A 3000-word essay stating the nature of one’s research and relevance of the Columbia programme to this research
2. A letter of support from the departmental supervisor, to be transmitted by the supervisor to the Law Department’s selection committee.
The Department will determine the final selection and then transmit the files of the recommended candidates to Academic Service in February for approval at Admissions Committee on 2nd February 2011.
Recommended candidates will be requested to present a separate, complete application to the Academic Service by the Institute’s deadline of 20st January. The application will include:
1. Letter of support from the faculty supervisor
2. Curriculum vitae
3. Two to Three page statement of intent ("work plan") summarizing proposed activity and indicating preferred period and length of stay. (This is basically a shorter version of the long essay that was prepared for the Law dept.)
After approval by Admissions Committee in February, Academic Service will contact the host university, asking them to forward Exchange Programme application forms to be filled in by the applicant. These are then forwarded to the US university with the candidate’s file. They will then examine the files and inform the EUI of the result towards mid-April/beginning of May.
