Recognition of the EUI Doctorate
The EUI Doctorate is awarded in the following forms:
-
Doctor of the European University Institute in History and Civilization
-
Doctor of the European University Institute in Law
-
Doctor of the European University Institute in Economics
-
Doctor of the European University Institute in Political and Social Sciences
On 3 June 1985 the Ministers of Education of the European Community established that the Institute's Doctorate should be recognised in Member States in the same way as equivalent national titles.
The countries of the European Union where recognition of university diplomas depends entirely on the universities themselves are Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain have official regulations governing the recognition of the Doctorate or the right to use the title of Doctor or Dr. as follows:
Austria
The title of Doctor may be used in Austria by holders of the EUI Doctorate and recognition is automatically awarded.
Belgium
The Flemish Government approved the recognition of degrees awarded by the EUI on 22 March 2002, and recognised the Institute doctorate as equivalent to a doctorate from a Flemish university. The holder is entitled to use the title Doctor and the abbreviation Dr.

The Conference of Education Ministers (KMK) established, by the Decision of 16 August 1978, that the Institute doctorate is equivalent to a doctorate from a German university. The KMK Decision of 4 September 1994 recognises the right to use the title of Doctor of the EUI in the Federal Republic.
France
A Decree of 20 October 1992 of the Minister of National Education established that the Institute doctorate was recognised as conferring the same rights and privileges as the doctorate introduced by the Higher Education Act No. 84-52 of 26 January 1984. This full equivalence applies in particular to the position of lecturer (maître de conférence) recently established by the Decree of 16 January 1992.
