Language Requirements

Candidates must have a good working knowledge of English.

Most seminars at the EUI are in English or French, and although a knowledge of Italian is not obligatory, researchers are encouraged to attend the Italian language courses at the Language Centre .

The Centre runs intensive courses in September and regular courses until the end of March in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Portuguese.

Self-Assessment of Language Ability

EUI interviewees must sit language assessment tests . The EUI does not require other proof of language ability (e.g. TOEFL, Cambridge, IELTS).

Read the Common European Framework of Reference  guidelines before giving your level of language ability.

Tested Assessment of Language Ability

Non-English-mother-tongue interviewees take a short test in written and spoken English similar to the TOEFL or IELTS test. This takes about 90 minutes and can be taken at any time during the interview period.

All interviewees are encouraged to take an optional  test in a language taught at the EUI (French, Italian, German, Spanish or Portuguese), where this is relevant for their research.

Language tests help in planning language courses during the academic year. The outcome does not effect the interview result, although the interview panel may recommend that a candidate improve language competence before registration.
