Leaves of Absence and Maternity Allowance
EUI rules require that researchers be resident in Florence during registration on the programme, but that in certain circumstances they may apply for a leave of absence from the Institute programme.
This excludes leaves of absence for thesis-related research visits or similar, or military service.
See EUI Academic Rules and Regulations for the Doctoral Programme, Chapter 4
Parental leave
Researchers wishing to take a leave of absence for maternity/paternity may request a period of leave of up to 6 months for each child. This leave may be extended up to 12 months if the researcher's grant authority so permts, based on the national regulations in force for maternity/paternity.
For this reason, researchers should examine what financial arrangements are in place, if any, with their national grant-awarding authority for a prolonged leave of absence of this kind and if they will be allowed to maintain their grant or be entitled to another form of allowance.
The EUI has a policy for a maternity allowance (see below).
A reasoned request, including a medical certificate where appropriate, should be sent to Ken Hulley or Françoise Thauvin in the Academic Service.
The Service will contact the researcher’s department for advice and submit the request to the Admissions Committee.
Prolonged illness
Researchers having to take time off from the programme because of prolonged illness should submit a request to the Institute in order to be granted leave.
The request must be backed up with a medical certificate from a recognized medical practitioner.
Researchers must check if there are any financial arrangements in place with their grant-awarding authority for prolonged leaves brought about by illness.
A reasoned request, with a medical certificate where appropriate, should be sent to Ken Hulley or Françoise Thauvin in the Academic Service.
The Service will then contact the researcher’s department for advice and submit the request to the Admissions Committee.
Other exceptional personal circumstances
A leave of absence may also be granted on compassionate grounds to a researcher submitting a request based on exceptional personal circumstances such as a death, family crisis, or personal trauma.
When submitting a request for leave, researchers should check what financial arrangements are in place with their grant authority if the leave is granted by the Institute.
A a reasoned request, including a medical certificate where appropriate, should be sent to Ken Hulley or Françoise Thauvin in the Academic Service.
The Service will then contact the researcher’s department for advice and submit the request to the Admissions Committee.
EUI maternity allowance
Female researchers registered in the one- or four-year EUI programmes may be eligible for payment of a maternity allowance from the Institute.
If granted, this allowance will cover up to the equivalent of 4 months of EUI scholarship.
Requests for the allowance should be addressed to Françoise Thauvin in Academic Service.
