PC to LAN Connection Parameters

Before you begin to configure your network card connection, we strongly urge you to read the policy statement  governing the use of this facility.

Your network card

This is the hardware you need to hook your portable to our network (LAN). The card must be of a type "10BaseT" or "10/100BaseT". To configure/install the card you must follow the directions provided by the manufacturer when you bought it.

The Computing Service cannot help you to install and set up your card.

Make certain, too, that the cable coming out of the card is at least one meter long, as you have to plug one end into a wall socket here at the Institute. If you need to, just buy a cable extension with your card. The connector type going into the wall socket from your card (or from the extension cable) must be RJ45. (This looks like one of the square plastic telephone plugs in common use, but it is somewhat larger.) Once your network card is installed and recognised by the PC, you can set up the connection by following the steps outlined for Windows XP , Windows Vista  and Windows 7 .
