Reading Your E-Mail from Outside the EUI
This is one of several webpages to help you access your e-mail account via a modem dial-in connection or, generally, when you are not logged in at the Institute. For a dial-in, it deals with the specific situation where your call is placed to a 3rd party ISP--Internet Service Provider--(e.g. TIN or Tiscali, as well as foreign providers such as T-Online) or you reach us from another University/Institute on the Internet.
In such a case, you can access your Institute mailbox in one of the following ways:
Using your web browser
Via your Web browser, to handle your e-mail through the EUI WebMail interface at https://postoffice.eui.eu/ . For instructions, see the document Using the EUI WebMail Service . This method requires that you maintain an open phone connection.
Using a POP3 e-mail client
Via an e-mail client programme (e.g. Outlook--recommended--or any other). You can work "offline" and need to connect only at the moment you wish to send/receive; but as you see below, you must correctly configure the client programme. That's what this guide is designed to show you.
We document setup parameters for the Outlook client below. If you use another programme you'll have to find where, among its configuration options, these values get inserted.
We also have to assume that your modem is functioning and you have already configured everything to actually place a call to your own ISP [1] .
For illustration purposes, we create an example for EUI user Aloisius Pippo:
1. In Outlook, go to Tools - E-mail Accounts and choose Add a new e-mail account.
2. Click Next and then choose POP3.
3. Click Next again and enter the information requested as illustrated below:
your real name and e-mail address; postoffice.eui.eu in the Incoming mail server (POP3) field, the information you receive from your ISP in the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field (we'll use "clubmail.tin.it" as a fictive example), and your EUI account username.
Make sure that the option "Log on using Secure Password Authentication" is not selected.
4. Encrypted Mail. POP3 access requires a secure connection (SSL). Click the More Settings... button and go to the Advanced tab. Activate the checkbox This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
That's all; just remember to click OK to save your settings, then Next and Finish to exit.
Nota bene
You must use an external provider—as indicated by the SMTP server setting, above—for sending mail. That is, you read your mail on our EUI POP3 server but the sending is done via your provider. This is for general security reasons and has no effect on how you work.
[1] When you subscribe, your ISP will give you the information you need to actually place the call.
