Thesis Correction

Once your supervisor has sent you and the Departmental Assistant an email stating that your thesis is ready for correction, take the following steps:

  • Choose a corrector from the Language Centre's List of Correctors ; correctors are native-language English-speaking researchers (not English Unit tutors) who are selected after a trial correction and a short interview
  • You may also contact someone not on the list of correctors, but s/he  must then be approved by the Language Centre before start work on your text
  • Send the corrector an electronic draft of the thesis after applying EUI formatting rules to the text*
  • The corrector makes an estimate based on the list below, and this is emailed to you and the Departmental Assistant (in the Law Department:to the secretary of the supervisor), stating the number of pages to be corrected (the table of contents and the bibliography are not included in the number of pages to be corrected) and the amount payable:

€300 up to 150 pp.   €400 up to 200 pp.  €500 up to 250 pp. €600 for up to and over 300 pp.
If the text needs extra correction due to poor language an extra 20% will be added to the cost. The corrector should email a request to the Language Centre. The Centre will reply by email in copy to the Departmental Assistant, stating whether or not this is justified.

The SPS Department will not normally allocate more than €500 for the correction of a thesis.

The LAW Department will not normally allocate more than €600 for the correction of a thesis.

    Note : LLM thesis

€200 for up to 100 pages for an LLM thesis. For full details about the language correction of LLM theses, please contact the Law Department.

  • After the head of Department has approved correction and the amount payable, you and the corrector will sign the Standard Agreement form  stating that:

the thesis will be corrected within four weeks

this agreement will be reviewed and finalised once the first chapter is returned

payment will be made after each chapter (i.e. you will pay the corrector).

  • Hand in the Standard Agreement form to the secretary of your supervisor
  • If the correction has been done to your satisfaction, pay the corrector.
  • Hand in receipt(s) of payment (your payment to corrector) to the secretary of your supervisor, who will then arrange for payment to you.

These rules apply to the 2005/6 and following cohorts.

For pre-2005/6 cohorts payments are made on a case-by-case basis

For post-2005/6 cohorts payments are added to one of the instalments of the 4th-year grant

For those who do not receive a 4th-year grant, the correction offer is valid within the 5-year limit
