Do I need to take a language test? 

Yes, interview candidates must take a short written and spoken test in English during the interview period.

 

If I have an English language certificate (e.g. TOEFL, Cambridge, IELTS) do I still have to take the English test? 

Yes, you still have to take the English placement test. Language certificates are not relevant for admission and not requested with your application.

 

What level of English do I need? 

Similar to the US TOEFL or English IELTS.

 

Does the result of the language test affect the outcome of the interview? 

If a special recommendation is made to improve language competence, final admission is conditional upon the required progress being made.

 

When can I take the language test and how long does it take? 

You can take the test at any time during the interview period without booking in advance. The test takes about 90 minutes.

 

Do I have to take any other language tests? 

No, only if your research or the Department requires a good knowledge of two languages, or if you wish to follow language courses other than English.

 

Will I still be able to follow language courses once seminars have begun? 

The timetable has been arranged to avoid clashes as far as possible.

 

Can I study for language certificates? 

Yes, although you may have to make a specific request, as courses for CELI (Italian), DALF (French), Goethe Proficiency (German), and DELE (Spanish) are not given on a regular basis.

 

Can my partner follow language courses? 

Yes, partners can follow language courses where there is a suitable level for them.

 

Are language courses free of charge? 

Researchers do not pay. All others should check Fees and Attendance  on the website.
