Visa Requirements (non-EU nationals)

We recommend that Fellows who are non-EU nationals check with their local Italian Embassy / Consulate for visa requirements well ahead of their move to Florence.

If a visa is necessary, you will need to apply for it for the full duration of the fellowship at the EUI. See Here

Filipa de Sousa  in the Welcome Unit   will give you a letter to support your visa application. Submit this to the Embassy or Consulate.

Dependent family members (married partners, children) who accompany a Felllow must apply for a visa of the same duration.

Note that:

  • the EUI cannot assist you with visa procedures after 1 July
  • the visa entitles you to enter Italian territory, but NOT to reside in Italy

For more info contact  Filipa de Sousa  at the Welcome Unit

Carta d'Identità (Identity Card) issued by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

A special ID card is issued by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministero degli Affari Esteri) to:

  • non-Italian members of the EUI
  • partners/family members of Fellows
  • Fellows staying less than 1 year

If you are eligible apply for a Long-term Mission Visa. This exempts you from applying for a Residence Permit (permesso di soggiorno).

  • the ID is issued after you are officially registered at the EUI
  • submit the necessary documentation well before your arrival, scanned copy of passport & digital photo (see Annex )
  • You will receive the ID card only after your registration at the EUI
  • Academic Service is responsible for the issue and delivery of the special Ministry ID cards

Residence Permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) and Residence Registration (Certificato di Residenza)

Who needs a Permesso di Soggiorno:

  • non-EU Nationals
  • dependent family members of Fellows
  • Fellows staying less than 1 year

Non-EU Nationals must apply for a Residence Permit within 1 week of their arrival. Contact Filipa de Sousa  for more info.

EU Nationals do not need a Permesso di Soggiorno.

EU citizens staying more than 3 months must register with the municipality (Comune, Ufficio Anagrafe) for a certificato di residenza.

The Italian State does not recognise unmarried/civil partners of Fellows when it comes to obtaining a Residence Permit.
