This conference seeks to shed light on the historical conjunctures in which “minorities” and their predecessor “communities,” were invented or challenged as categories of cultural, legal, economic, political and military significance in the Middle East since the Ottoman Empire through the current time. We seek to investigate the details, continuities and disruptions in the invention and management of difference in different historical conjunctures. What kinds of institutions, organizational structures and political orders were negotiated in the process of trying to articulate these groups as governable populations? We also seek to draw comparisons between moments of contestation: moments when the identity-categories and governing structures through which population groups are produced, are re-configured.
