In power for almost 15 years – first as Prime Minister and then as President of the Republic –Recep Tayyip Erdogan has never hidden his yearning for the Ottoman Empire’s greatness and his aspiration to turn Turkey into a regional power, befitting its historical depth and flourishing economic development. Attempts to concretise this project, however, have each time further threatened Turkish democracy. The recent amendments to the Constitution, which aim to reform Turkey’s institutions towards a greater concentration of power in the hands of the President, now appear as the last move to legally consolidate Erdogan and the Justice and Development Party’s solid grip on power. So how was this transformation in Turkish politics made possible?
