"What is the way out of this situation for the euro area at the macro level?
Is there a significant rebalancing now happening within the euro area?
Are improvements also taking place in competitiveness?
Stabilizing the European Monetary Union over the long-term, however, may require a more fundamental reform of the institutional architecture. The approach pursued at Maastricht was found to be inadequate in the context of highly integrated financial markets. Having been stress-tested over the last three years, there is a clear need to deepen what rules and institutions are essential for monetary union to function effectively. Does a stable EMU needs to be built on four pillars: financial union, fiscal union, economic union and political union? These are the macro and political questions that a group of economic and political experts will try to answer at an informal gathering in Florence on 21 January 2013"
