Digital-IntermediariesThe purpose of this Academic Seminar, organized by the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom, is to contribute to the discussion on the role of digital intermediaries in media systems. In particular, we would like to explore new methodological possibilities and approaches in assessing the impact they have over media pluralism.

Digital intermediaries such as news aggregators, search engines and social media platforms have positioned as new gatekeepers and communicative power centres that strongly affect the information flow, influence political agendas and shape the media economics. Private technological companies, e.g.Facebook and Google, now exercise control over the way people access and engage with news (Digital News Report 2016). For example, while already being the leading distribution network that makes editorial decisions, Facebook is also positioning as a direct publishing platform by offering features such as Instant Articles and Facebook Live

  • Introductory note has been prepared (recorded) by the Susan McGregor, Assistant Director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism & Assistant Professor at Columbia Journalism School.
  • Mato Brautovic from University of Dubrovnik will give a lecture on Measuring Media Pluralism by Using the Big Data: Possible Methodologies & Tools.
