‘Working’ on the rule of law: how international and local actors translated rule-of-law ideals into practice in East Timor

This project has been funded via the EUI Early Stage Researchers (ESR) call 2023.

This project is an interdisciplinary study that engages with issues in the areas of transnational law, social change, and international development. I examine the role of transnational actors – international and local – in facilitating social change through legal reforms. Building on scholarship within transnational law and international development, I show how national legal fields facilitate recognising and regulating internationally identified social problems in local contexts. Using a case study, this project unpacks what happens when national/local communities start recognising and regulating social problems identified at the international level through law.
