Structure of Doctoral Programme in Political and Social Sciences
At the EUI, we offer well-structured doctoral programmes that ensure our researchers receive the academic freedom to explore their chosen subject, with support and close supervision from our staff.
On arrival within our Department of Political and Social Sciences, you are assigned a supervisor to offer guidance and help you develop your ideas. Throughout your time at the EUI, you will be able to participate in research activities offered across the institution. This includes the weekly seminars and the many conferences within our Department, as well as those organised by other EUI departments or the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies. Such events are led by faculty members and guest speakers, who regularly visit the EUI, meaning you learn to present and discuss your research through interaction with these high profile experts.
During your first year, you take courses that build your knowledge and understanding of quantitative and qualitative methods. These take place alongside work on your thesis and, in March of your second year, you are expected to submit written work that amounts to at least 25% of your dissertation. Your third and fourth years focus on your research and writing, with funds available for fieldwork, if required.
In your third and fourth years, there are opportunities for you to develop the teaching and academic literacy skills that prepare you for post-doctoral and professional jobs, both within and outside of academia. In addition, the EUI also offers exchanges with American and European institutions.
