Hans-Peter Blossfeld's Details

Short Biography


 

Blossfeld has taught at and held visiting positions at several universities including  Harvard and Cornell University, Nuffield College in Oxford,  the University of Southampton, the Universities of Haifa and Tel Aviv, the Karl-Franzens University in Graz and the University of Vienna. He has also held visiting positions at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration in Bergen, the Université de Genève, the Universities of Utrecht, Nijmegen, and Groningen, the Universities of Trento and Torino, the Université de Montréal, and the State University in St. Petersburg.

Blossfeld is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina) in Germany, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (BBAW) , the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (BAW), and the European Academy of Sociology. From 2004-2009 he was the Chairman of the European Consortium of Sociological Research (ECSR) and since 2014 he is President of the Society for Longitudinal and Lifecourse Studies (SLLS). 

In 2010, Blossfeld awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Tallinn, Estonia, and in 2012 he received by the “Honorary Badge with Ribbon” from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia. In 2012 he was appointed IAB Research Fellow of the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) in Nuremberg, Germany, and ROA Fellow by the Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA) at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. 1990-2012, Blossfeld was Editor-in-Chief of the European Sociological Review (ESR), 2003-2012 he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Zeitschrift für Familienforschung (ZfF) (Journal of Family Research), and 2005-2013 he was Co-Editor of  International Sociology (IS).

Currently, he is a member of the Editorial Board of the Zeitschrift für Erziehungswissenschaft (ZfE) (Journal for Educational Research). He also serves on the scientific advisory board of the Kölner Zeitschrift für Soziologie und Sozialpsychologie (KZfSS), the  Zeitschrift für Soziologie (ZfS), the journal Studies of Transition States and Societies (STSS), the journal Društvena istraživanja (The Journal for General Social Studies), the Journal of Sociology and Social Anthropology (JSSA) and  the Portuguese journal Revista Sociologia.

Blossfeld has published 44 books and over 300 articles on life course research, social inequality, youth, family, educational sociology, labor market research, demography, social stratification and mobility, the modern methods of quantitative social research, and statistical methods for longitudinal data analysis – which have been cited more than 24,000 times (H-Index = 68; I10-Index = 212; see Google Scholar, March 2017).

Recent and Current Research Projects


  1. Principal Investigator of the project “Education as a Lifelong Process – Comparing Educational Trajectories in Modern Societies" (eduLIFE) funded by the European Research Council (ERC).The eduLIFE project started in June 2011 and is currently based at the European University Institute, Florence. The eduLIFE project is worth 2.5 million euro and is to be completed by the end of May 2016.

  2. Academic Coordinator (together with Prof. Sabine Weinert) of the DFG Priority Program 1646 ‘Education as a Lifelong Process’. There have been two funding periods of this program: The first one was from January 2012 until the end of 2015 and from 2016 until the end 2018.The budget for this DFG Priority Program is about 4.5 million euro.

  3. Director of the DFG Project “Changes in gender-specific educational trajectories and their consequences for job entry and careers of men and women in Germany,” which is part of the Priority Programme 1646 ‘Education as a Lifelong Process’ (2012 – 2018) (Funds amount to about 500,000 Euro), European University Institute, Florence.

  4. Co-Director of the research project “Bildungsprozesse, Kompetenzentwicklung und Formation von Selektionsentscheidungen im Vor- und Grundschulalter“ (BiKS) - Educational Processes, Competence Development, and Formation of Educational Decisions in the Early Educational Career), together with Prof. Dr, Hans-Günther Rossbach, Prof. Dr. Gabriele Faust and Prof. Dr. Sabinde Weinert) at the Interdisciplinary Research Center (of the German Research Foundation, DFG); funds of about 8.3 million euro) (March 2005 - March 2016).
