Ulrich Krotz

Ulrich Krotz is Professor at the European University Institute, where he holds the Chair in International Relations in the Department of Political and Social Sciences and the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies,and founding director of the EUI’s program on Europe in the World: International Relations, International Security, World Politics. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University, has taught at Oxford University and Brown University, and held research positions at Harvard University, the EUI, and Princeton University. He is the author of Shaping Europe: France, Germany, and Embedded Bilateralism from the Elysée Treaty to Twenty-First Century Politics (with Joachim Schild) (Oxford, hardback 2013, paperback 2015); History and Foreign Policy in France and Germany (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015); and Flying Tiger: International Relations Theory and the Politics of Advanced Weapons (Oxford, 2011), and contributing co-editor of Europe’s Cold War Relations: The EC Towards a Global Role (with Kiran Klaus Patel and Federico Romero) (Bloomsbury, hardcover 2020, in press; paperback in preparation). 

His articles have appeared in leading journals in international relations and European politics, including World Politics, International Security, International Affairs, the European Journal of International Relations, Foreign Policy Analysis, West European Politics, the Journal of European Public Policy, and the Journal of Common Market Studies. His work has been published in English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, and Russian. Shaping Europe is being translated into Chinese and Albanian. His current research focuses on issues of international security in changing regional and global political environments, transatlantic relations, and various aspects of European security and Europe in international affairs, and includes the research monograph Divided We Stand: The EU’s Global Engagement Through Military Operations and Civilian Missions in 21st Century World Politics.
