Research and Teaching
The Department’s doctoral programme places a strong emphasis on the theoretical and methodological tools required for Ph.D. research. In the first year there is a common core course on approaches and methods in the social sciences, as well as more specialized courses in research design and additional courses in quantitative and qualitative methods.
A wide range of seminars and workshops is offered in key fields, many linked to the current research interests in the Department, while others are interdisciplinary and organized jointly with other EUI departments.
Intensive courses and workshops are offered as needed and where funding is available for the ECPR and other summer schools. Colloquia organized by professors with their supervisees provide space for discussion of research design and problems.
The Department has good working relations in research and teaching with the Departments of Law, History and Economics and with EUI's research centre, the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, and takes a particularly active part in RSCAS seminars and workshops. The Department is also at the centre of extensive international networks.
The Department hosts a number of large, collaborative projects financed by the European Commission Framework programmes or other external sources, and has many individual projects resulting in single-authored books and articles.
Researchers can consult the visiting professors and fellows hosted by the Department each year, and whose work is linked to that of the faculty.
The main working language for research and teaching is English.
