Abstract

In the 19th century theological, nationalistic and racist ideologies combined in the formation of modern anti-Semitism.

Although the interest in the attitude of the Roman Catholic Church towards the Jews has increased in recent years, few attempts have been made to analyze the role of the Church in the formation and development of modern anti-Semitism.

The purpose of the present project is, firstly, to analyze the hybrid anti-Semitic discourse in the Jesuit journal “La Civiltà Cattolica” 1850-1949, and, secondly, to examine the production of this journal and its interaction with lay anti-Semites in view of illustrating the role of the Church in the rising and development of modern anti-Semitism.
