Lorenzo Zamponi

 


Born in Castelfranco Veneto (Italy) in 1983, Lorenzo Zamponi is a research fellow in Political Science and Sociology at the Scuola Normale Superiore - Istituto di Scienze Umane e Sociali in Florence.
He holds a Ph.D. in Political and Social Sciences from the European University Institute, with a thesis titled "Memory in Action: Mediatised Public Memory and the Symbolic Construction of Conflict in Student Movements", supervised by Donatella della Porta.
He has also been teaching Italian Politics at the Elon University (NC, USA) in Florence since 2013, and in the same year spent some time as a visiting scholar in the Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences (Humboldt University).

Lorenzo studied Communication Sciences at the University of Padova, where he finished his first level degree in 2005, with the thesis "Comunicare l'identità di classe: la stampa sindacale a Treviso 1952-1960" (Communicating class identity: the trade union press in Treviso 1952-1960), and his master degree in 2008, with the thesis "I circuiti della memoria: giornali, tv e la narrazione delle foibe 1946-2007" (The circuits of memory: press, TV and the narrative of foibe 1946-2007). He specialised in social movements, public memory and media analysis.

Lorenzo is the early career representative in the steering committee of the Research Network 25 (Social Movements) ofn the European Sociological Association, and is a member of the standing group on social movements and political participation of the Società Italiana di Scienza Politica (SISP), of the standing group on participation and mobilisation of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) and of the research network on social movements of the Council for European Studies> (CES).

Lorenzo is also a journalist and member of the Italian Ordine dei Giornalisti. Since 2005 he has been collaborating with various mainstream, independent and alternative newspapers and magazines.

Lorenzo's research interests include social movements and contentious politics, in particular student movements; symbolic and cultural aspects of mobilisation; media system and media analysis; collective memory, social memory and public memory; labour, precarity and education; qualitative methodologies, digital qualitative methods, participatory action research.
