Antonio Bonatesta is an research assistant at the European University Institute’s Alcide De Gasperi Research Centre where he works on the project: “The European Investment Bank and the 'Mezzogiorno' in the context of regional development (1958-1973)”. He holds a MA in Political Science and International Relations (2009) and a Ph.D. in Historical, Geographic and International Relations Studies (2013) from the University of Salento (Italy), where he was research fellow in Contemporary History (2014-17).
His main research interests lie in the European integration process and the history of the Italian 'Mezzogiorno' in Europe. Between 2015 and 2016 he was the recipient of a “Vibeke Sørensen” grant at the Historical Archives of the European Union and received a Postgraduate research grant on “Christian Democracy and European Integration” from the EPP Group in the European Parliament.
He has published several papers in Italian and international journals in the field of European integration history, including on Community Regional Policy and European Christian Democracy. A book entitled "Europa «potenza civile» e Mediterraneo. La politica comunitaria di Carlo Scarascia Mugnozza (1961-1977)" is forthcoming. He is board member of Sissco (Società italiana per lo studio della Storia Contemporanea).
