How long can I keep a borrowed item? See the list of loan periods determined by item type. Can I borrow periodicals? No, periodicals can only be consulted in the Library. What happens if I lose a book? Inform the Library by e-mail. The Library will make a series of checks to ensure that the book hasn't been returned in the meantime. If still not found you will be charged €70 for the lost item (€50 default cost + an administrative charge of €20). The Library will estimate the current replacement cost of the item. If over €50, you will be charged the difference (no refund if less). If the Library decides against replacement, you will be charged the difference between the default cost and the original of the item if the latter is greater. What shall I do if the book I want is listed as 'on shelf', but I can't find it? When a book is missing from the shelf, place a hold request for the book. The Library will conduct a search for the book over the next 10 working days. Once the book is found, you will receive a notification for pickup at your requested location. If the book cannot be located within the search period, you may refer the matter to the Library Information Specialists for a follow up. If you are looking for material that cannot be loaned such as periodicals or reference material, please fill in this form. Where and when can I return books? Items can be returned directly to the Library Loan Desk for immediate check-in from 08.30 to 18.30. There is also a returns box or book drop available at the Loan Desk and one in the President's corridor where returned material can be deposited. Keep in mind that any book returned in the book drop has been ‘returned remotely’ and there will be a time-lag before the book is checked in at the Loan Desk. EUI members based in EUI buildings other than the Badia may deposit their books at any time in the dedicated boxes. These are collected and returned to the Library once a day. A book is only considered 'returned' by the Library when it has been checked in and removed from your library account. Check your personal Library account to ensure that the books have reached the Library and been checked in. It is your responsibility to notify the Library of any discrepancy. Where can I see my current checkouts, due dates, and checkout history? Log in to ‘My Account’ for a complete list of your current checkouts, due dates, and checkout history. The Library has a policy of strict liability; you are responsible for all items checked out in your name. You should check your account regularly and inform the Library immediately of any anomalies. Can I extend the loan period? EUI Library books on loan may be renewed up to 24 times. If another user has put a hold on your book, or you are suspended from the Library, renewal requests will not be accepted. Overnight loans may not be renewed. In exceptional circumstances, an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) may be renewed if the request is made at least two weeks before the due date and the lending library agrees. Can the Library recall books on loan? The Library reserves the right to recall from users any borrowed book or other library item. Another user has the book I want. Can I reserve it? Yes, search for the item you want in the Catalogue, select 'Place hold' and enter your EUI username (e.g. jsmith) and password. You will be notified by e-mail as soon as the book is ready for pick-up. If you need to cancel a reservation, you can do so by logging into My Account. Didn't see your question here? Please send an email to [email protected] and Library staff will assist you. Why is it risky to take library books out of the Florence area? For two reasons: first, travelling with books exposes them to a higher risk of damage and loss and you are liable for any replacement costs or library fines incurred. Second, if another user reserves the book, it will not be possible to renew it and you will be liable for any fines imposed because of a late return. Page last updated on 13 January 2025
