Limited opening in May 2020

From 11 May 2020, the Library will open to EUI members, offering the loan service and number of working spaces to be assigned on a first-come first-served basis.
Access is not possible for retired members, alumni, or external users.

From 10.00 – 18.00, Monday to Friday to a maximum of 60 users with active EUI status.

How to access

Access is possible exclusively from the Lower Loggia through the Vasco Da Gama glass door. Users can enter only after having passed through the EUI checkpoint nearby.

Working spaces

Working spaces are assigned on a first-come-first-served basis. A Library staff member will accompany users to their working place, or to the loan desk to pick up reserved books. Working spaces are located according to regulations stipulated by the EUI Security Officer. Each working space will have details of required code of behaviour in the Library, and a list of security and safety regulations. All users must observe the 1.8m social distance rule. The Library will provide a 10 square metre perimeter for each user.

Use of the lifts in the Library is not permitted. The Discussion Room and the Social Room on the second floor are also are off limits.



The sole exit is through the door in the loan desk area.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

All users and library staff must wear masks and gloves whilst in the Library. These will also be available from entrance staff on duty.

Handling printed books

Users can access books on shelf if wearing gloves. After consultation, all books must be left on the clearly marked trolleys nearby. All consulted books will be collected each evening and will enter quarantine for a minimum of 72 hours. Users wishing to consult a book for more than one day should take the book on loan. All books returning from loan should be placed in the drop boxes for quarantine.

All bathrooms, working spaces, multifunction machines, water fountains, entrance area and loan desk will be disinfected regularly during opening hours. The EUI is currently managing the procurement of book sanitisation equipment. All windows and doors, including the garden doors, will be opened twice a day to allow air circulation. Disinfecting gel will be available in the Library. When turned on, the air conditioning in the library will not be recycled air, but refrigerated air sourced from the outside.
