Fatema Jafari is a Member of the Provincial Council of Herat in Afghanistan and a Women’s Rights Activist. A midwife by training, she was first elected to the provincial consult of Herat in 2009. In 2012, she received training on governance as part of the International Visitors Leadership Program in the United States. She was re-elected in 2014 despite threats from the Taliban.

In 2016, she was a Greenberg World Fellow at Yale University and as a result she wrote and published a book titled “Women Political Participation in Afghanistan”. As part of a grant award from Protect Defender, Fatema is currently Policy Leader Fellow at the EUI's School of Transnational Governance, where she is focusing on women’s role in the fight against corruption in Afghanistan.
