Network Areas

All members of the EUI have access to file space on the network (the amount, or space quota, depending on their status), which is referred to, depending on its purpose, as Personal, Common, Web or Shared Area(s).

All network areas can be accessed via EUI's computers (desktops and laptops) as well as from personally-owned computers, including off-campus (via VPN Remote Connection).

Depending on which Department/Programme/Project/Service you are in, the network area(s) may be stored on several different servers. Knowing the names of the servers is crucial to be able to access the areas from laptops and personally-owned devices.

How to Use (Purpose)

Personal Area

This is tipically referred to as your G: Drive, homedrive or homeserver and should always be used to store your personal, work-related data.

It is used as well to store so-called "roaming" files, that is settings and configuration files (for example, Internet Explorer's Favorites, Stata's Do files, etc.) allowing you to always find the same settings and personal customisations whatever EUI computer you log into.

This area is backup regularly and can be accessed remotely as well (e.g. from outside the Institute, via VPN Remote Connection).

Common Area

This is a shared area available to Departments only and is tipically referred to as H: Drive. It can be used to share data among researchers, fellows, academic and administrative staff inside one's Department. Being public, it should NOT be used to store personal data.

This area is NOT backup (thus should NOT be used to store important data) and can be accessed remotely as well (e.g. from outside the Institute, via VPN Remote Connection).

Shared Areas

These areas are accessbile to fellows, academic and administrative staff and serve the purpose of sharing files within the same working area (Department, Project, Service, etc.). Accordingly, the drive letters may vary depending on which Department/Programme/Project/Service you are in, although the S: drive is always defined as the Unit's main shared network area.

Access to Shared Areas is restricted to users working in the same working environment but can be extended upon request by the person in charge (Head of Department, Departmental Assistant, Project Manager, Head of Service, etc.) of the area of interest.

Shared areas are structured in such a way that all users of that area can access at least its root. Each shared area contains a number of standard folders (Administration, Projects, RAME Filing System, etc.). We draw your attention to the fact that no confidential files should be stored on the root as this is accessible by everyone!

All shared areas are backup regularly and can be accessed remotely as well (e.g. from outside the Institute, via VPN Remote Connection).

Web Area

This is tipically referred to as your W: Drive and is a personal area used to store the files building up your Personal Web Page at the EUI.

IMPORTANT: this drive is phased out and is only available to new cohorts prior to academic year 2016-'17.

This area is backup regularly and can be accessed remotely as well (e.g. from outside the Institute, via VPN Remote Connection).

IMPORTANT: as a personal homepage stays online even after leaving the EUI, please make sure to update and/or remove any unwanted contents before your affilitation ends. Being a personal area, please note as well the ICT nor the Webmaster are allowed access thus cannot update any contents.

How to Access

Accessing network areas differs depending on the platform (desktop PC or laptop) and Operating System (Mac, Linux or Windows).

If you are on campus, just follow the links below straight away.

If you are off-campus, connecting via VPN Remote Connection is needed beforehand.

EUI Desktop PC

Mac: click here to find out how to access your network areas on an EUI Mac desktop PC.

Windows: default areas you have access to (like personal or departmental ones) are already available as "Network location" drives (G:, H:, W:, etc.) in Windows Explorer. If you have been granted access to additional network areas, click here . Please note in this case you will need to know the full path (server name and folder) of the network area you want to connect to.

Laptop (both EUI ones and Personally-owned)

Linux (Ubuntu): click here to find out how to access network areas on your Ubuntu laptop.

Mac: click here to find out how to acess network areas on your Mac laptop.

Windows: click here to find out how to acess network areas on your Windows laptop.

Space Quota

The amount, or space quota, available depends on your status (academic or administrative staff, alumni, fellow, partner, researcher, etc). Click here for details on the amount of quota available to you.

If you require additional space, contact the EUI Helpdesk detailing the quantity of space needed and justification. Please note for researchers the request should orginate from their Supervisor.
