Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs "Grants for Foreigners" Programme

No separate funding application is required.

The application for admission to the EUI doctoral programme is automatically an application for a grant.

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation - Directorate General for Public and Cultural Diplomacy - Office IV - awards grants to doctoral candidates who are nationals of the following countries:

  • Albania
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • People's Republic of China (PRC)
  • Montenegro
  • North Macedonia
  • Kosovo
  • Russian Federation
  • Serbia
  • Turkey
  • Ukraine
  • United States of America (USA)

EU Candidates who are dual nationals (i.e. nationals of the above mentioned countries, as well as nationals of an EU member state) are not eligible for these scholarships.

Grants and Allowances

Monthly Grant: 1,505 €, including contribution for health insurance costs - see details below.

Family allowance: No

Travel allowance: Yes (provided by the EUI)

Health insurance: Provided by the EUI only in the 1st year of registration in the doctoral programme (2024-2025). From year 2 to 4, health insurance expenses should be individually budgeted for, by the grant recipient, within the limit of their grant. The Academic Service can provide information on health insurance options.

Grant plan:

  • Year 1: Monthly grant provided by the Grant Authority, health insurance through CIGNA provided by the EUI to facilitate arrival in Italy.
  • Year 2: Monthly grant provided by the Grant Authority, health insurance to be individually budgeted for by the grant recipient.
  • Year 3: Monthly grant provided by the Grant Authority, health insurance to be individually budgeted for by the grant recipient.
  • Year 4: Monthly grant provided by the EUI (EUI 4th year grant), health insurance to be individually budgeted for by the grant recipient
