The application for admission to the EUI doctoral programme is automatically an application for national funding.

Norwegian candidates should apply for admission to the EUI Doctoral Programme using the EUI online application form for this purpose. An application to the EUI is automatically also an application to the University of Oslo for a Ph.D. grant. Acceptance at the EUI entitles the candidate to a Norwegian Ph.D. grant for three years. The grant holder will in this period be employed by the University of Oslo. The same rules apply to grant holders as to other employees, i.e., rules for leave, sickness, pension contributions etc,

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who are Norwegian citizens or hold a permanent residence permit in Norway are eligible to apply. Candidates must give proof of their Master's degree or equivalent degree before the start of the Ph.D. programme at the EUI.

Eligibility is not automatic, and it is carefully verified for each candidate.

Grants and Allowances

Ph.D. stipend per year for three years: NOK 532 200 (pre-tax).

Additional grant for the first year: NOK 276 000 for single candidate or NOK 468 000 if the candidate brings family (equivalent to the Research Council of Norway's (RCN) rate for research stay abroad without/with family).

Operating expenses per year for three years: NOK 40 000

Insurance: Yes

Family allowance: No

Must apply for voluntary membership in "Folketrygden".

The University of Oslo provides a monthly salary for the first three years of the EUI Ph.D. Programme. The fourth year is covered by the EUI (2025 grant is 1.620 EUR per month). In addition, the candidate may apply for a grant for research stay abroad (equivalent to the RCN's rate for research stay abroad) for the fourth year from the University of Oslo.
