The future of religious education in Europe: the knowledge about religion and religious knowledge in secular societies
The aim of this workshop is to take stock of debates about religious education in Western European public school systems. It will bring together scholars who defend a model of secular education about religion and theologians of different (Catholic, Protestant and Muslim) backgrounds who are experts in confessional religious education in order to engage in a debate about the future of religious education and education about religion in Europe. The main puzzle we want to explore is how religious education is conceptualized in the different approaches: is it merely the acquisition of knowledge about religions (historical and cultural features); or do we mean also knowledge that is transmitted by religions (specific values and worldviews); and what about the aspect of learning “in” religion – through the participation in ritual, for example? What benefits are prioritized in the different approaches to religious education: the formation of pluralistically aware and tolerant citizens (the democratic argument); of culturally literate individuals (the cultural argument); or of informed moral subjects (the educational argument)?
Members of the EUI community are welcome to attend, prior registration is required.
