The European Advantage in Global Lawyering: The Foundations

Dates:
  • Mon 05 Dec 2016 15.00 - 17.00
Add to Calendar 2016-12-05 15:00 2016-12-05 17:00 Europe/Paris The European Advantage in Global Lawyering: The Foundations

The post-war dream of European integration that aims to achieve an ever closer union between the nation states of Europe based on peace and prosperity is receding in the face of resurgent nationalism. European Union bashing and trashing is becoming ever more fashionable. The left critique, in particular, focuses on European democratic, social and more recently justice deficits. However, this critical turn often lacks critical depth and, in the end, proves to an intellectually shallow response to the demise of a certain idea of Europe.

The aim of this seminar is to engage more reflexively with the intellectual foundations of European integration and European law. Through exploring the deeper intellectual currents that influenced the founders of the EU, researchers can develop a new, non-traditional perspective for thinking about EU law, and thereby understand in a new light what is truly sui generis about EU law.
