This conference took up the question of how contestation over Europe has affected voters, party competition, party systems. Which theory or theories are most helpful in explaining the changing voter and party landscape in Europe? Are we seeing fundamental change in the basis of partisanship? How can one explain country variation? Does it make sense to conceive what is happening as de-alignment, realignment, or the creation of a new political cleavage?
