The development of an anthropological approach to the study of social and cultural phenomena has been the result of a complex intellectual evolution between XVIIIth and XIXth century. The growing interest for manners and customs had a major role in this process, marking an essential character of the historiography of the age of Enlightenment and an important continuity with that of the following age. Inside this framework, the intellectual profile of Jean-Nicolas Démeunier and mainly his major work, the Esprit des Usages (1776), offer various elements of special interest, aiming to go beyond the level of the ethnographic observation towards the establishment of a comparative methodology. The lecture will try to remark some major points of his approach, highlighting the tensions connected to Démeunier’s ideas on the civilization process, and to point out the peculiarity of this author in the intellectual and cultural context of his time
