On Monday 5 June 2017, in an unprecedented move, the three Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, in addition to Egypt, cut diplomatic relations as well as air, sea and land borders with Qatar. Moreover, they ordered Qatari officials and citizens living in their countries to return home within a few days. It is a full siege! On the other hand, Arab countries are split into two camps. They have either downgraded their ties with Qatar or they are calling for dialogue among crisis parties. The situation remains blurred and provokes greater questioning over what the motives are behind the escalation, where such escalation will go, and why now.
