Voters in Europe, as well as the United States, are being drawn away from traditional ways of governing in favor of more authoritarian, populist, nationalist, and nativist alternatives, raising alarming threats to the rules-based liberal democratic model of governance painstakingly constructed in the seven decades since the end of World War II. William Drozdiak is a widely traveled and seasoned expert on Europe with access to the continent’s leaders and familiarity with its various societies, and the question he addresses in the book 'Fractured Continent: Europe’s Crises and the Fate of the West' is how did the united, peaceable Europe of the late 20th century turn into the discordant continent of the early 21st. And will Europe regain its footing and reassert Western leadership or will it continue to stumble, diminishing itself and undermining the transatlantic alliance that has been held up as a foundation of global security?
