Add to Calendar 2018-03-01 14:00 2018-03-01 16:00 Europe/Paris Modern Readings of Epicureanism: Political Receptions and the Politics of Reception - First Reading Session (Pleasure and Happiness)

This reading session will provide a grounding in the Epicurean tradition, ancient and modern.

The discussion series will culminate in a 1-day workshop with internationally-recognized experts in the modern reception of Epicureanism. The workshop is dedicated to modern readings of the ideas of Epicurus and the Epicurean tradition. With a particular emphasis on its social and political implications, the workshop investigates the continuity of Epicurean themes in Western thought: from the materialists and mortalists in 17th-century England, through the French libertines and free-spirits, to Enlightenment philosophes and political economists, and Marx, Guyau and Nietzsche in the 19th-century.

Organisers: Federico Testa (AEUIFAI Postgraduate Fellow - EUI; PhD candidate at The University of Warwick & Monash University); Jared Holley (Max Weber Fellow - EUI)

Please find attached the workshop program as well as a list of readings for the first discussion session (the full list of readings is also accessible online: https://www.eui.eu/ProgrammesAndFellowships/MaxWeberProgramme/Activities/MRW20172018).
