La gauche, va-t-elle disparaître?

Dates:

  Add to Calendar 2018-04-19 15:00 2018-04-19 17:00 Europe/Paris La gauche, va-t-elle disparaître?

André Burguière’s La gauche va-t-elle disparaître? offers a lucid perspective on the current, lamentable situation of the left in Europe from the point of view of a historian, but also that of an engaged intellectual, militant for the Ligue des droits de l’homme. His goal is not to trace one strand of the Left or another, but to explore the common ground that binds them together. If, on the one hand, he explicates a shared ideological heritage, stemming directly from the French Revolution, and indirectly from the long history of democracy, he also shows how this tradition has recently lost ground with the erosion of the “noble passion for equality” in the face of numerous challenges: a professionalization of politics that marginalizes the ideas and opinions of ordinary citizens, the weakness of trade unions, the pressures of neo-liberalism and “security” politics. Uneasy but not resigned, André Burguière reminds us that the true project of the Left is simple, but oh so challenging: to render society more just, more protective, and more democratic.

Please join us for a roundtable discussion – in English – of André Burguière’s marvelous and very timely book!
