The MEDirections programme organises a discussion with Robert Springborg on his new book 'Egypt' (Polity Press, 2017).

The book offers a detailed account of the recent changes both within the state and civil society in Egypt after the January 2011 uprising. It analyses the governance crisis in today’s Egypt by deconstructing the concept of the deep state, analysing the civil-military relations, as well as the crisis of both the political and civil society. The Egyptian "hot spot", Springborg argues, is destined to become steadily hotter, with ominous implications for its peoples, the Middle East and North Africa, and the wider world.

Robert Springborg is a Research Fellow at the Italian Institute of International Affairs, Rome. Formerly, he was Professor of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, and Programme Manager for the Middle East for the Center for Civil-Military Relations; the holder of the MBI Al Jaber Chair in Middle East Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, where he also served as Director of the London Middle East Institute. Previously, he was the Director of the American Research Center in Egypt.
