The Paris Agreement, adopted in December 2015, marked a dramatic breakthrough in multilateral climate change negotiations, following years of deadlock. Its new governance model has been hailed by some as a more realistic approach to tackling the global challenge of climate change, whilst others fear that it will fall woefully short in delivering upon the Agreement’s ambitious 2oC/1.5oC targets and goals. The challenge of implementing the Paris Agreement presents an important opportunity for innovation, contestation and debate. During this two-day workshop, leading practitioners and scholars in the field of human rights and climate change law, policy and governance will assess potential pathways to implementing the Paris Agreement, drawing on comparative insights from human rights governance. The workshop will consider whether there is potential for learning from the human rights regime to ensure progress in implementing the Paris Agreement and in enhancing its capacity to deliver upon its ambitious goals.
