Dates:

Add to Calendar 2018-06-11 10:00 2018-06-11 13:00 Europe/Paris The General Data Protection Regulation in context: Data Protection in International Organisations in general and in the EUI in particular

Issues of data protection have reached center stage lately (Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, Google Spain, Schrems, Passenger Name Records etc.). The full applicability of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the EU’s Member States on 25 May 2018 created a ‘hype’ in the press and led to a flood of e-mails for all of us. A far less explored topic is still the issue of the GDPR’s effects on International Organisations (IOs), such as the EUI.

The workshop will attempt to close this gap. It will have three main parts: after an introduction by Amb. Vincenzo Grassi, the EUI’s Secretary General, Prof. Christopher Kuner, a leading specialist of data protection in IOs, will present the results of his research on data protection and IOs. In the second part, Dr. Günter Wilms, the EUI’s Data Protection Officer, will introduce the concrete effects of the GDPR on the EUI’s data protection policy. The final part of the workshop will be dedicated to an extensive Q & A session in order to provide ‘hands-on-advice‘ to the EUI-community and to receive input for the preparation of the legislative changes in the EUI’s DP policy.

His publications on EU-law related issues include an e-book on the Rule of Law in the EU ( Protecting fundamental values in the European Union through the rule of law, 2017) and a poem about Europe thirty years after the Single European Act (L’Europe à soixante [Trent ans après l’Acte unique européen]). He holds an LL.M. from the EUI and a PhD in administrative science.
